Message to Parents from the OPD

MESSAGE TO PARENTS FROM THE OAKLAND POLICE DEPARTMENT:

dontAs widely reported in the news media during the past several days, on Friday May 4, 2012 the Old Tappan Police Department received a report of an “attempted luring” incident.  At approximately 3:49 PM a tan Caucasian or dark skinned Hispanic male with “spiked” hair on top and short on the sides, wearing sunglasses, approached two nine year old females on the grounds of the T Baldwin Demarest School in Old Tappan. The man was seated in his car, described as a four door sedan with yellow New Jersey License plates, and asked the girls to “come here”.  The girls responded appropriately by fleeing from the man and notifying the authorities.  The man fled the area in his vehicle and was unable to be located by responding police officers.  The incident remains under investigation by the Old Tappan Police Department.

This incident should serve as a reminder to parents to talk with their children about the dangers of talking to strangers.  The young ladies in this incident acted appropriately and fled from this individual and immediately notified an authority figure.  Your children should be reminded, that if they are approached by someone they do not know or recognize, that they should safely flee the immediate area and contact someone of authority, a Parent, Teacher, School Administrator, Custodian or Police Officer.  If at all possible, without compromising their own safety, your children should be asked to make a mental or written note in regards to a description of the actor and/or his or her vehicle.

Any questions, please contact the Oakland Police Department @ 201-337-6171.
