June Special Events at the Oakland Public Library (Children’s Dept.)
“Tail Waggin’ Tutors” is an opportunity for Oakland children, ages 5 & up, to read to a very lovable dog. Daisy, and her “mom”, Jean, will visit the Library on Tuesday, June 7 from 6:30 to 7:10 p.m. Sadie, and her “Mom”, Donna, will visit the Library on Thursday, June 9 from 5:30 to 6:10 p.m. Both Daisy and Sadie are registered therapy dogs with Therapy Dogs International. Each child will have about ten minutes to read a favorite story to a dog. The program will be held in the Library’s story gallery.
Father’s Day is just around the corner! Daddies and Daughters will Learn to Braid with a little help from Lilly’s Blow Dry & Makeup Lounge on Saturday, June 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Oakland Public Library’s Story Tower. Dads will learn how to make ponytails, braids and pigtails for their daughters, ages 4 to 10. Seating is limited for this program.
Acclaimed singer-songwriter, Teri Merliss, will present her special blend of imaginative stories, original songs, and audience participation on Friday, June 17 from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. in the Oakland Public Library’s story tower. Oakland children, ages 2 & up, are invited to attend with a parent or caregiver.
Comic bubble artist, Casey Carle, will present his “Bubblemania” show on Thursday, June 23 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at the Dogwood Hill School. Mr. Carle has won numerous awards and accolades during his bubbly career. He is a graduate of Ringling Bros. Clown College, and has developed unique skills with manipulating and juggling bubbles. Oakland children, ages 5 & up, will be amazed, amused, and astonished with the talent of this one-man phenomenon! Registration begins Tuesday, June 7. This program is sponsored by the New Friends of the Oakland Public Library.

Preschool Story Hour for three to five-year-olds will be held on Mondays from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. AND 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. in the Oakland Public Library’s story gallery. The six-week session will begin Monday, June 27, and end August 8. (No Story Time on Monday, July 4.) The session may include stories, songs, crafts, or activities for this age group. Registration is recommended.
Tots Library Club (TLC) is an unstructured, early library experience for 0 to 24-month-olds and their caregiver. A seven-week session of TLC will be held on Thursdays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the Oakland Public Library’s story gallery beginning June 30. The last session will be Thursday, August 11. Registration is recommended.
The Terrific 2’s & 3’s Story Times for two to three-year-olds and their caregiver will be held from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. on Fridays from July 1 to August 12. The session may include stories, songs, crafts, or activities for this age group. Registration is recommended.
Paper airplane enthusiasts will be creating a variety of planes on Tuesday, June 28 from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. in the Pat Turnier Craft Room. There will be a special “Fly-Zone” for testing the finished products! Oakland children, ages 5 & up, are invited to attend this very popular program. Registration begins Tuesday, June 14.
Kathy Murarik, the President of the NJ Sled Dog Club, will discuss the Iditarod and NJ Dog Sledding on Thursday, June 30 from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. in the Oakland Public Library’s Children’s Dept. The program will also feature special canine guests. Oakland children, ages 5 & up, will be introduced to this exciting sport. Registration begins Tuesday, June 14.
It’s time for a casting call! The Oakland Public Library Players, a drama club for children, ages 6 & up, are looking for participants for this summer’s production. Children will meet in the Oakland Public Library’s gallery from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the following dates: Thursdays, June 30, July 7, July 14 and July 21, and Mondays, July 11 and July 18. (Participants must be able to attend each of these sessions, please.) The Oakland Public Library Players will present their one and only performance on Monday, July 25 from 8:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Ponds Reformed Church. Registration begins Tuesday, June 14.

2016 Oakland Public Library Summer Reading Club (Children’s Dept.)
This Just In: The Children’s Dept. of the Oakland Public Library is recruiting Reading Champions this summer! Oakland children of all ages are eligible to join the 2016 “On Your Mark, Get Set…Read!” Summer Reading Club. Sign up begins Monday, June 20. Flying high with books will be a requirement. There will also be a great line-up of story times, activities, a drama club, and sportstacular special events. All programs are free of charge.
The events begin Thursday, June 23. Merit stickers and prizes will be awarded all summer long. Pre-readers will earn weekly prizes for completing a variety of early literacy activities. Readers will be given prizes each week as books are recorded in their reading logs. Each book or 50 pages earns a prize. Oakland children can read right up to the finish line date, which is August 10th. Three grand prizes will be awarded to reading club participants at the end of the summer. Students entering sixth grade & up can join the teen program, “Get In the Game…Read!”
