Spill Contained, Drinking Water fine after Tractor Trailer crash into Ramapo 1

Update via the Borough FB Page – August 13, 8:04pm:

Rt. 287 Tractor Trailer Accident Update

Following last night’s accident, a salvage crew continues to offload the cargo from the trailer that fell into the Ramapo River. We expect that the trailer will be removed by sometime tomorrow. Diesel fuel from the accident did make its way into the Ramapo River and Bergen County Hazmat responded. The spill has been cleaned to their satisfaction but additional containment booms have been placed in the river as a precaution in case of contamination when the trailer is moved. Borough agencies are coordinating with the salvage company and will continue to monitor the cleanup. Additional updates will be provided if conditions warrant.

The Wal-Mart tractor trailer accident on I-287, causing the trailer portion of the truck filled with GatorAde to fall into the Ramapo River on August 12 caused concern to many residents who were overwhelmed with the stench of diesel fuel. We reached out to Mayor Linda Schwager who stated “The spill is contained. The Bergen County Hazmat Team was here. The smell occurs with the slightest amount spill.”

According to Josephine Kukla, as of this morning the diesel fuel smell was “better, but you can still see the fuel in the river”.  Mayor Schwager assured us that “Our drinking water is not threatened and the river will run off the spill.

All the people in the vehicles are okay with the truck driver taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
