Editor’s note: This is not a joke. The proposed law can be viewed online.
A law proposed for the State of New Jersey will require all bicycles to be registered and display a license plate. Each plate shall contain a clearly visible license number and shall bear the insignia “BICYCLE” in clear lettering.
A form for the registration would require the following questions be answered along with a $10 payment for a 2 year registration.
a. The year of manufacture, make, model, color, and unladen weight of the bicycle;
b. The serial number of the bicycle;
c. The name, street address, and age of the owner of the bicycle, and if the owner is under 15 years of age, the age of the parent or guardian applying for the registration;
d. The amount of New Jersey sales tax paid when the bicycle was purchased;
e. The signatures of the applicant;
f. The month, day and year of purchase;
g. Any other information required by the chief administrator.
Obviously, many residents have older bicycles and some information such as year of manufacture and amount of sales tax might not be readily available. In these situations, registrants can provide an affidavit swearing to the truth regarding the acquisition of the bicycle. …..Swearing in general will not suffice.
