On the Job – June 1


marijuanaOn May 26, 2011 at approximately 2:30 a.m., Ptl. Rowin arrested a 25 year old Oakland resident as a result of an inquiry into a suspicious vehicle in the business district of town.  The officer’s investigation led him to a large multi-colored pipe which is commonly used to smoke marijuana and a small bag of marijuana on the individual’s person.  Charges included the possession of suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia.  The man was released on his own recognizance and given a date to appear in the Oakland Municipal Court.

On May 28, 2011 Ptl. McDermott was dispatched to investigate a report of a disabled vehicle on Ramapo Valley Road .  The officer located the vehicle and found that it was not occupied.  His investigation led him to an individual walking in the area who later admitted that he had operated the vehicle and after he had realized that he had had too much to drink, he decide to park it and go for a walk.  Ptl. McDermott had the driver conduct some standardized field sobriety tests and subsequently arrested him for driving under the influence of alcohol.  Additional charges included driving without motor vehicle insurance, driving on a suspended driver’s license, refusing to submit to the Alcotest machine, and operating an unregistered vehicle.  After processing, the 53 year old Newton , NJ resident was released on his own recognizance and given a date to appear in the Oakland Municipal Court.

On May 29, 2011 Ptl. McDermott conducted a motor vehicle stop on Ramapo Valley after observing the vehicle being operated in an erratic manner.  Upon the officer’s approach to the vehicle, he immediately detected the strong odor of burnt marijuana emanating from the vehicle’s passenger compartment.  Further investigation led the officer to locating a small amount of marijuana and a marijuana pipe. Along with the assistance of Oakland ’s drug recognition expert, Ptl. Keenan, Ptl. McDermott arrested the 18 year old Ramsey man.  Charges included driving under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.  After processing, the man was released into the custody of a responsible adult and given a date to appear in the Oakland Municipal Court.
