Warning about companies overcharging for deeds

BERGEN COUNTY CLERK JOHN S. HOGAN WARNS ABOUT COMPANIES THAT CHARGE EXCESSIVE FEES FOR MORTGAGE RECORDING

For several years now a company called National Deed Service and/or National Record Service has targeted new homeowners advising them that they must have a certified copy of their deed. Bergen County Clerk John S. Hogan wants to alert and educate the public to these companies.

The price they are charging represents a significant increase over mandated rates.  “I am concerned about companies taking advantage of our citizens”, states Hogan.  “The original deed is held by owner of the property and if it is lost or misplaced, a certified copy can be obtained from my office at a reasonable cost”.  Per the Clerk’s Office, a four (4) page deed would cost $18.00.

The Office of the Bergen County Clerk records deeds and other property records.  After recording the original document, it is sent to the homeowner, their attorney or lender.  “My office protects the integrity of your documents by preserving and safely storing a scanned copy so if it is ever misplaced or destroyed we can provide homeowners with a certified copy at a nominal cost”, stated Clerk Hogan.

In addition to properly recording services, the Bergen County Clerk’s Office also provides Vote-by-Mail ballots and assists voters through sample ballots to familiarize them with upcoming elections.  The office registers new businesses with Trade Names, acts as passport Agents for applications, files Construction Liens and other services.  For a complete list of our functions, hours, telephone numbers and forms go to www.bergencountyclerk.org
