Pedal Sports of Oakland will be up at the Ringwood Farmers Market on Saturday June 14 from 9am-to-1pm. They will be bringing some of the most cutting edge Road and Mountain bikes from Specialized Bicycles for visitors to the market to test ride and learn about.
The Ringwood Farmer’s market, open every Saturday during the sumer season, is only in it’s second year of operation, but has already become a neighborhood tradition for residents in the area. Their opening weekend events drew twelve hundred people and, weather permitting, they are expecting even bigger crowds on Saturday June 14. Don Weise, who authored A Hiker’s Guide to Climbing the Heart of the Highlands, will be there to discuss his book; and, Ringwood Mayor Davison is expected to be on hand to offciate with a traditional ribbon cutting ceremony. There will also be free raffles and demonstrations.
Oakland is being represented by Pedal Sports which is located on Elm Street right near The Elm Street Bar & Grill–convenient location after a long ride. The store is owned by Rob Rybacki, who has lived in Oakland most of his life, and has a passion for bikes that goes back to his BMX racing days when he was ten years old. Rob originally worked at the shop when it was called Ramapo Valley Cycle. But while Rob pursued a graduate degree in Sport Science and Exercise Physiology, the shop was sold and soon closed its doors due to poor management. After working for a time as a physical therapist, occasionaly treating such sports luminaries as Bobby Hurley, Rob took the entrepreunrial plunge and re-opened the store from his youth; Pedal Sports was born on April 1st, 1996.
The Farmer’s Market is billing Saturday’s events as “Get Out and Play Day”. Pedal Sports particpated in the Market last year, and organizers of the market are hopeful other local merchants might get involved. The Oakland Journal actively promotes “Think Local”, and a farmer’s market is an excellent forum for community members to get to know the businesses in the area and to help bolster the local economy.
The businesses that operate in this regional economy provide economic support for our civic organizations, create jobs, and provide a tax base. Communities around the globe are implementing campaigns to have their citizens start to think local, and they are educating them on the importance of supporting local businesses to help foster vibrant local economies. The market in Ringwood provides a forum for smaller businesses to economically market their goods and services, and it also has a healthy impact on the larger business community. It serves as a community gathering place, a side stop for recreational tourists and source for a wide range of fresh vegetables, fruits, flowers, prepared foods and crafts.
