Hi, Ryan Robinson here talking about the great VMS Summer Programs. The programs started today, June 23 and will be going until July 14th. They do not have classes on July 4th though.
They have programs on Math, Drama, Art, Science, and Music. I talked to Mr. Glenn Clark, Principal of the Summer Programs. “I really like doing these programs every year. I like it. Kids like it.” He also told me that about 75 kids are signed up from Grades 2-8. There are 2 sessions during the day. One from 8:30 to 9:30 and the other 9:35 to 10:35. “I also like the special touch that the Recreation Dept. does for the kids that go to camp there.” You see, about half the kids go to the Oakland Rec Camp from the programs. So, councilors pick them up from the school and take them to the camp.
I also interviewd Mr. Parra, one of the Science teachers at VMS doing a Science Class.
RR: So what do you like about doing these summer programs?
Mr. Parra: I enjoy introducing children to the world of science without the pressure of tests and homework. The activities are all fun, interactive, and relaxed, all the while providing the learner with an in-depth experience of how a scientist works.
RR: What will you be doing in your Summer Science classes?
Mr. Parra: I plan on introducing my students to anatomy/physiology through the dissection of frog and shark specimens. We will be performing water ecology labs, examining cell biology with microscopes and preparing slides, performing DNA extraction techniques, chemical reactions, work with electricity, circuits, as well as any other experiments my students might suggest.
RR: Will you be doing this again next year?
Mr. Parra: If all goes well and my students have as much fun as I do, then my answer is, Absolutely!
There are no openings now, (you had to sign up earlier) but its great if you ARE HERE! Want to get in the fun for next summer? Well, just pay attention when your kid brings notices home from school this upcoming school year!
