On the Job – October 27th

On October 20, 2010 officers were dispatched to a residence on Oneida Ave on a reported break-in in progress.  Prior to the officer’s arrival, it was reported by the victim/homeowner that the suspect, who was known by the victim, left the scene and fled towards the area of Manito Ave and Iroquios in a blue colored minivan.  Ptl. Kern located the van in front of a residence on Manito Ave.   The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of the driver, an 18 year old Oakland resident for burglary. It was determined that the driver of the vehicle, who was a friend/acquaintance of the victim, was at the residence on Oneida and had an altercation with the victim.  He left the residence for a short period of time and when he returned, he observed one of his boots on fire in the street in front of the victim’s home. Out of anger, the 18 year old suspect broke the glass out of the rear door to the residence and entered the home in an attempt to gain access to the victim, who had locked himself in an upstairs bathroom after lighting the boot on fire.  The victim dialed 9-1-1 and the suspect fled prior to being apprehended by Ptl. Kern.  In addition to the burglary charge, the 18 year old resident was charged with simple assault and criminal mischief.  He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail in lieu of posting bail which was set at $35.000.00.

Lt. Chris Eldridge, Sgt. Keith Sanzari and Ptl. Frank Fiore assisted in the investigation.
