Indian Hills High School students have joined the ranks of hundreds of other high schools across the country in producing an online newspaper accessible to all in their community.
IHfan.net, authored and edited by Indian Hills students, is a new step for the high school version of the fourth estate. It offers a mix of school and sports news, announcements, and articles of general interest.
The promotion of scholastic journalism has been strongly promoted for over a century with Allan Abbott reviewing a presentation of scholastic journalism in 1910. His strong support for those efforts was tinged with the regret of how the cost of paper was a serious impediment to these publications….those days are over.
The online world of communication now offers students the ability to produce a newspaper for a few dollars a year, and their efforts can stretch far beyond the school walls. The Knight Foundation funds HSJ.org, High School Journalism, which provides a platform for schools as well as offering advice. The National Scholastic Press Association publishes StudentPress.org which conducts annual contests to recognize achievements of web based student newspapers.
The Student Press Law Center, founded in 1974, recently rewrote their mission statement to reflect the dramatic changes in high school journalism and the industry in general. Their efforts include not merely supporting the First Amendment rights of students, but championing the concept of open government on campus.
IHFan.net, previously known as Drumbeats when available on the HSJ.org platform, is a funded and supervised Indian Hills High School club.
IHfan.net is available via a link in the main navigation bar of The Journal.
