August Special Events at the Oakland Public Library (Children’s Dept.)

“Tail Waggin’ Tutors” is an opportunity for Oakland children, ages 5 & up, to read to a very lovable dog. Daisy, and her “Mom”, Jean, will visit the Library on Tuesday, August 4 from 6:30 to 7:10 p.m. Sadie, and her “Mom”, Donna, will visit the Library on Thursday, August 20 from 5:30 to 6:10 p.m. Both Daisy and Sadie are registered therapy dogs with Therapy Dogs International. Each child will have about ten minutes to read a favorite story to a dog. The program will be held in the Library’s story gallery. A Super Hero Treasure Hunt will be offered for Oakland children, ages 5 & up, on Tuesday, August 4 from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. in the Children’s Dept. of the Oakland Public Library. Register now in person, online at http://oaklandnjlibrary.org, or by calling 201-337-5236.

The National Circus Project will present the “One-Man Circus” performance on Tuesday, August 18 from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. AND 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Ponds Reformed Church. The show features circus skills from around the world! All Oakland families are invited to attend. Reading club members will receive their reading club certificates and enjoy a special treat. librarykinderThe Children’s Dept. of the Oakland Public Library will host the Thirteenth Annual Kindergarten Kickoff on Wednesday, August 26 in the Library. This is an opportunity for those children entering schools in Oakland to meet their classmates prior to the first day of school. Meeting times are as follows: Manito (10:00-11:00 a.m.), Heights (11:15-12:15 p.m.), and Dogwood Hill (1:00-2:00 p.m.). A special story time and gift-for-teacher craft is planned. Veggiecation, a culinary nutrition education program about vegetables, will be presented in the Oakland Public Library’s Children’s Dept. on Thursday, August 13 from 11:00 to 11:30 a.m. Oakland students, in grades three to five, are invited to attend. The Bergen County Dept. of Health Services wants to introduce participants to the delicious and nutritious world of vegetables! New Friends of the Oakland Public Library Book Sale (Adult Dept.)

The New Friends of the Oakland Public Library are busy planning their annual Book Sale for late October 2015. The Library is now accepting donations of gently used and new books, CD’s, jigsaw puzzles, and video games.
