Super Hero Craft at the Oakland Public Library (Children’s Dept.)

Computer Workshops at the Oakland Public Library (Adult Dept.)
The Oakland Public Library will be holding five Computer Workshops on Wednesdays from July 8th through August 5th from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. The workshops will be on Goodreads, Introduction to the Internet, Gmail 101, Facebook, and Microsoft Work Basics. Paper airplane enthusiasts will be creating a variety of planes on Thursday, July 2 from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. in the Pat Turnier Craft Room. Tots Library Club (TLC) is an unstructured, early library experience for 0 to 24-month-olds and their caregiver. A six-week session of TLC will be held on Thursdays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the Oakland Public Library’s story gallery beginning July 2.

The Terrific 2’s & 3’s Story Times for two to three-year-olds and their caregiver will be held from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. on Fridays from July 10 to August 7. Preschool Story Hour for three to five-year-olds will be held on Mondays from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. AND 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. in the Oakland Public Library’s story gallery. It’s time for a casting call! The Oakland Public Library Players, a drama club for children, ages 6 & up, are looking for participants for this summer’s production. Children will meet in the Oakland Public Library’s gallery from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the following dates: Mondays, July 6, July 13, and July 20, and Thursdays, July 9, July 16, and July 23. (Participants must be able to attend each of these sessions, please.) The Oakland Public Library Players will present their one and only performance on Monday, July 27 from 8:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Ponds Reformed Church. 2015 Oakland Public Library Summer Reading Club (Children’s Dept.)
Bam! Pow! Read! The Children’s Dept. of the Oakland Public Library is asking all Oakland children to activate their reading powers this summer! The 2015 “Every Hero Has a Story!” Summer Reading Club will begin Monday, June 22. While books are the perfect sidekick, there will also be story times, games, activities, and awesome special events! All programs are free of charge.
Not one, but two, fantastic programs will start the summer celebration! Oakland children, ages 5 & up, will meet one of our everyday heroes on Tuesday, June 23 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. when the Bergen County Sheriff introduces a member of its K-9 Team during a visit to the Library. On Wednesday, June 24, the Children’s Dept. will introduce a hero of a different kind—John Higby, the Guinness World Record Holder for 2008, 2011, 2012, and 2013, and the 2008 World Yo-Yo Champion! The program will be held in the multi-purpose room at the Dogwood Hill School from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Oakland children, ages 4 & up, will be dazzled by this yo-yo master! Super Readers will earn merit stickers and prizes all summer long. Pre-readers will be given a variety of early literacy activities and earn weekly prizes for completing the suggested activities. Readers will record books in their reading logs. A merit sticker and a prize will be earned each week for reading 1 book or 50 pages. Students entering sixth grade & up can participate in the teen program, “UnMask”. All readers can power up with books until Friday, August 7. Oakland families will then be invited to the “One-Man Circus” performed by the National Circus Project. The program is sponsored by the New Friends of the Oakland Public Library.

2015 Oakland Public Library Summer Reading Club (Adult Dept.)
Join the Oakland Public Library in celebrating the 2015 Adult Summer Reading Program “Escape the Ordinary”. Pick any book you like and simply let us know what you read! The more you read, the more chances you have to win the Grand Prize: a Kindle Fire! Registration starts June 15th and is required. The Seeing Eye from Morristown, NJ will be visiting the Library on Thursday, July 16 from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. Oakland children, ages 5 & up, are invited to attend. The program will describe the puppy raising, training, and use of a Seeing Eye Dog, with a special meet and greet with a Seeing Eye Dog. The Children’s Dept. will also have a gift box for voluntary item donations for The Seeing Eye, beginning Tuesday, June 30. A list of suggested items will be posted. This is everyone’s opportunity to be a hero! The items will be presented to The Seeing Eye representative on the day of the program. Teen Special Events at the Oakland Public Library
The Oakland Public Library will be holding three “DIY” or “Do-It-Yourself” Days from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. on the following Tuesdays: June 30, July 14, and July 28. From robotics to art, these fun and interesting programs, will be open to students, grades 6 & up. Enthusiasm and creativity is all that will be needed! Snacks will be served. Registration is not required.

July Book Discussion at the Oakland Public Library
The Oakland Library Book Group meets the second Thursday of each month at 6:45 p.m. at the Library. The next meeting will take place on July 9, 2015. July Displays at the Oakland Public Library
The Girl Scouts will be celebrating the work of their great organization in the upstairs display case in July. Local artist, Mary Mancuso, will exhibit her landscape and still life oil paintings in the Lower Level gallery of the Oakland Public Library during the month of July.

“Tail Waggin’ Tutors” is an opportunity for Oakland children, ages 5 & up, to read to a very lovable dog. Daisy, and her “Mom”, Jean, will visit the Library on Tuesday, July 7 from 6:30 to 7:10 p.m. Sadie, and her “Mom”, Donna, will visit the Library on Thursday, July 23 from 5:30 to 6:10 p.m. Both Daisy and Sadie are registered therapy dogs with Therapy Dogs International. Each child will have about ten minutes to read a favorite story to a dog. The program will be held in the Library’s story gallery.
