Official Agenda At The Bottom
The official agenda is at the bottom of this article, The Journal has used a crystal ball, some research, and then added some additional links and documentation to make it a little easier to see what’s in store for the next council meeting.
AWARD STREET SWEEPING BID – Speaks for itself. But mentioning it’s a $92,000 contract for 20 months makes for so much more exciting reading.
TAX APPEAL SETTLEMENT BI-COUNTY
This concerns a developer who owns property back near Long Hill Road. He wants his tax bill reduced since the value of his property has been reduced due to an ability to build as it was originally zoned. This reduction in value is due to the evolution of NJ Highlands, and court cases.
AUTHORIZE PURCHASE PLAYGROUND SAFETY SURFACE
This might be for the playground near the Danny D building at the recreation complex. The present surface of chewed up rubber tire has been a source of complaints by many parents as the substance leaves children regularly stained with black hands, feet, shoes, etc due to their being in contact with the material. The contract is for about $59,000.
(This just in: Yes it is for the playground near the Danny D building. Through the efforts of Former Rec Commission Chair, Steve Wagoner a matching grant was awarded for this project.)
SUPPORT LEGISLATION-SEASONAL UNEMPLOYMENT/CROSSING GUARDS
Sounds like legislation to prohibit crossing guards from collecting unemployment. Since one can’t really target just crossing guards, the legislation would need to target all seasonal employees — meaning anyone who knows they will not be working during a portion of the year. Here’s a short news article on the bill.
LICENSE BOROUGH PROPERTY 40 RIVERSIDE DRIVE
Based on the agenda, it appears that the borough owns the property and will be offering a license of use to someone else. You can see a general location by using the link above which goes to a map.
AMEND SIGN ORDINANCE
The sign ordinance is being amended….The crystal ball foresees this having to do with signs…
FINAL ADOPTION AMEND ZONING ORDINANCE
This probably has to do with what was discussed at the last meeting concerning the Finale property. Here’s the ordinance.
REORGANIZATION OF BOROUGH COMMITTEES AND COMMISSIONS (VISCONTI)
Since we’re well into 2012, and most reorganizations have taken place, this must have some secret meaning beyond the traditional usage of the word. The crystal ball says it might be in reaction to the rec ad hoc committee, the farmer’s market etc, that created the circus atmosphere at the last meeting.
If the crystal ball is correct, the mixture of fireworks and flatulence could make for an explosive drama-rama exhange.
LAKESHORE DRIVE BANK STABILIZATION (STAGG)
Probably an update on the Ramapo River erosion situation.
PAY TO PLAY (COIRA)
Continuation of the efforts to curtail the political contributions of contractors and vendors working for the borough of Oakland.
TRANSFER OF EQUIPMENT RELATED TO TEEN CANTEEN (KUNZE)
Rumor has it that the PTO will be taking over the teen canteen.
TGP GAS PIPELINE PROJECT (JENSEN)
Pipeline project that is slated to cut through parts of Mahwah near the Ramapo Reservation – the wooded lands off of 202.
LIMITING HOURS OF ICE CREAM TRUCKS (JENSEN)
No mention of what the hours of operation would be limited to.
BOSWELL PROPOSAL FOR 2012 ROAD PROGRAM (KUNZE)
Oakland usually develops of plan for regular maintenance of roads.
FARMERS MARKET (KUNZE)
Rumor has that it will be located in the drive used to exit the borough hall complex on to 202– sort of next to the board of ed offices. Possible start date at the end of June.
Other Towns Agendas
The agenda items concerning the Oakland town council meetings always have an air of mystery about them. Other towns in New Jersey, and across America, realize that it is sometimes helpful for people to know in advance what elected leaders will be discussing at a public meeting.
Bradley Beach offers a nice agenda packet that allows people to click to the area of interest – in their most recent meeting it was the passage of various resolutions – and read the resolution themselves. The Borough of Hightstown, NJ offers a very extensive preview of the council meeting with an abundance of supporting documents so residents can familiarize themselves with the subjects being discussed.
In Oakland, there seems to be an attempt at borough hall, but we must resort to more crude and less efficient methodologies – such as a crystal ball.
