Hansil’s Anniversary Fundraiser

Rocking late into the night with World Within

Hansil’s 15th Annual Pig Roast with proceeds going to Eva’s Kitchen in Patterson had a great turnout even though the weather did not cooperate. Heavy rains kept many folks from attending, but the crowds were still bigger than last year. In anticipation of even larger numbers, Steve and Miriam Hansil had three pigs roasting this year but the third one ended up being brought over to Eva’s kitchen.

World Within was on hand keeping the people dancing and rocking till the closing bell in the morning hours. The preparations started around 8am in the morning, and clean-up continued well after the 2am closing, so it was a long day for the owners and volunteers who worked to celebrate a neighborhood anniversary while helping a good cause.

Miriam included yellow rice, stuffed tomatoes, jerk & curry chicken, and an assortment of more traditional BBQ items like ribs, hamburgers and hotdogs to the menu of roast pig. Sister M. from Eva’s Kitchen offered two grateful speeches of appreciation to the partyers: one inside the tavern, and another outside to those under the protection of tents set up for the event. Hansils is still selling T-shirts which are available for the suggested donation of 10$-$15, and are decorating the place in anticipation of their Halloween Bash on Nov. 1st featuring the music of Balance, costume prizes, and a buffet with some of the same Caribbean dishes mentioned such as Jerk Chicken. This event starts at 9pm and has a $10 cover charge.

LymeLife

Filming through the window

Folks up in Toronto were recently looking through the windows of Hansil’s via the Toronto Film Festival where the movie LymeLife won The Fipresci Prize awarded by members of the international film critics’ organization. Although billed as an independent film, it boasts actors Kieran and Rory Culkin, Timmothy Hutton, Jill Hennessy, Emma Roberts, Cynthia Nixon and Alec Baldwin.

The movie also received the blessing of Martin Scorsese who is listed as an executive producer. It is the first feature film of the Martini brothers, Derick and Steven, and they filmed some scenes here in Oakland. The film was screened at the festival this past September and is expected to be released in January.

Lyme disease, where the title gets its name, plays only a marginal role in the movie. It is the story of two families set in the 1970s, and offers similarities to “The Ice Storm” and “American Beauty”. Descriptions vary, but the film is often described as a comic drama.

Lymelife follows Scott (Rory Culkin), an awkward teenager with a more sophisticated girl-next-door, Adrianna (Emma Roberts). Like the parents in the two above mentioned films, their travails leave the children with less than stellar role models, although Baldwin brings in the comic relief many of his recent films have shown. The return of Scott’s older brother, (Kieran Culkin), sets into motion the unveiling of many family secrets.
