Freeze Frame: Photographic History of the Winter Olympics by Sue Macy

dinofreezeThis beautifully compiled book presents the history and stories of the winter Olympics.  The book features images which capture the drama and history of the Winter Olympic Games.  Beginning with a foreword by Peggy Fleming, the book highlights the legends of various sports, different superstars and heroes and focuses on the inclusion of “extreme” sports in the Winter Olympics.  The book finishes with excellent trivia, maps, quotes, and resources for further reading.   Although geared towards older children, the book is the perfect way to educate and excite children about the upcoming Olympic Games.

Martin Luther King Jr. A Dream of Hope by Alice Fleming

dinokingOne of our collection’s newest additions covering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Fleming’s book covers King’s life from childhood to his lasting legacy.  The biography presents sidebars to put the Civil Rights movement in a greater historical context as well as featuring information on other influential Civil Rights activists.  Fleming includes an index and glossary to help explain some of the terms used.  While Fleming’s biography is written for older children, the Oakland Public Library owns 14 different biographies on the man honored on January 18th for children of any age to check out.

Tacky and the Winter Games by Helen Lester

dinotackyTacky, a lovable yet foolish penguin competes in the Winter Games with his fellow penguins.  Although Tacky’s pregame meal of donuts, pizza and chips does not seem to benefit his team, he finds a uniquely Tacky way to help his team.  The comical illustrations mixed with the simple text will please any reader and may resonate with fans of Mo Willems (Author of Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus and other popular children books.).   There are many other Tacky adventures to read so take home Tacky today!
