Barnstable Academy celebrates National Children’s Book Week

barnstablereadOakland, NJ, May 22, 2014 – Barnstable Academy hosted a school wide “READ IN” recently to celebrate National Children’s Book Week.  In its 95th year, Children’s Book Week is the annual celebration of books for young people and the joy of reading.  Established in 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest running national literacy initiative in the country.  Every year, commemorative events are held nationwide at schools, libraries, bookstores, homes, or wherever readers and books connect.

All of Barnstable Academy’s middle and high school students along with their teachers and administrators participated in Barnstable’s third annual “READ IN”.  Students and faculty alike brought in a non-school required book and spent an entire 50-period reading quietly during the demonstration.

“Our school is celebrating by participating in a school-wide read-in, because the best way to celebrate literature is to read,” explained Ashley Crowley, Reading Specialist and Coordinator.  “Since the faculty also takes part of this, the students see that we also believe in the power of reading,” Crowley added.

Barnstable Academy is located at 8 Wright Way in Oakland, New Jersey and provides an alternative college preparatory education to students in grades 5 through 12.
