Franklin Lakes Adopts Ordinance Restricting Parking for Out-of-Town Commuters
The Mayor and Council of the Borough of Franklin Lakes, at their October 21 meeting, adopted an ordinance which will limit parking during commuting hours in the Veterans Parking Plaza lot to residents only, with a few limited exceptions. From 6:00 am to 2:00 pm, Monday through Friday, only residents with a hanging parking tag will be permitted to park in the lot which is located on Franklin Avenue between Pulis Avenue and Bender Court, as well as a limited number of teachers for the Franklin Avenue Middle School, those attending events at the VFW building during these hours, and seniors for senior meetings or events.
This new ordinance will take effect as of December 1. Parking tags, which will be hung on the rear view mirror, can be obtained by Franklin Lakes residents from the Borough Clerk between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:00 pm, starting on Wednesday, November 5th. The Borough Clerk’s Office will also be open for parking tag applications on Monday, November 11th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and on Saturday, November 15th, from 9:00 am to noon. Driver’s license and original car registration(s) will be required. The fee for the parking tag is $25, payable by cash or check. The parking tag is transferable to other vehicles within the household, provided the driver of the vehicle meets the residency requirements. Residents can download a parking tag application from the Borough website.
Councilwoman Nathalie Lota, who has been working on this ordinance for the last several months, commented as follows: “We have seen over time that the VFW lot is always filled with commuters. Based on our research, nearly half of these commuters are from out-of-town. We want to make sure that the residents of Franklin Lakes that use the bus for their commute are able to park in the Borough lot. At the same time, we are helping to meet parking needs for the school and for our seniors for their meetings.”
