Business Is Good

Business is good, perhaps the economy in general still stinks, but business is good when it helps support a local economy in diverse and creative ways.

Topcon Medical Systems announced in April it’s move from Paramus to Oakland, and this July hosted the official ribbon cutting ceremony.

Topcon Medical Systems, TMS, is a market leader in diagnostic imaging technologies and connectivity solutions for ophthalmology. Dynamic business growth and development at Topcon is one reason for the move to Oakland. The company required more office space, and the result is a state of the art headquarters and warehouse for company employees, clients, and industry colleagues.

The benefits to the local economy have been immediate, and TMS actively works to promote local businesses and non-profits in the area. The company newsletter provides reviews of local restaurants with Oakland Pizzaria being featured recently. The Brick House in Wyckoff was the venue for the banquet reception after the ribbon cutting ceremony, and Portobello’s was the site chosen for a large farewell party to a company retiree.

On the charitable side, donations were handed out to the town of Oakland and the police department at the ribbon cutting. The company is also encouraging employees to participate in the upcoming 5k & Fun Run to benefit The Matthew Larson Foundation based in Franklin Lakes. Perhaps some of the 22 employees who have joined Lakeside Fitness are training to take part – that’s the number of new members the fitness club has gotten since the company moved in.

c_topflag1A recent five day seminar held by the company this past June brought representatives from Brazil, Panama, Peru, Costa Rica, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador. Northwest Bergen County may not rival The Big Apple, but there is enough diversity in eateries, accommodations, and as one TMS employee reported, “…the community we’re located in – Oakland, is a very peaceful and tranquil place.”

Paramus probably won’t miss TopCon so much, but the communities of Oakland, Wyckoff and Franklin Lakes are reaping some immediate benefits from the companies relocation. The company itself is excited over the increase in space, contemporary design, and latest technological advancements implemented.
