According to the United States federal government, via a statement issued by NASA, the world will not end on December 21st, 2012; and the prime minister of Russia has also publicly stated that the world will not end – at least in 2012.
On the other hand, the prime minister of Australia released a video recording available on Youtube where she confirms the end is near, wishes everyone good luck, and looks forward to no longer conducting press conferences.
But only Oakland appears to be approaching the end of the world with an American pragmatism that combines frugality and fun.
A list of local businesses offering specials, deals, discounts, or simply a fun last night is available on ThinkOakland.org; they have also established a public invite on Facebook where they will be posting the specials.
The list of participating businesses on ThinkOakland.org is impressive and growing as a countdown timer on their website ticks away the seconds till the end of the world on December 21st, 2012.
The idea that the world will end on 12.21.12 is based on the fact that this is the date when the Mayan calendar runs out.
Normally, this would involve the Mayans creating a new calendar – which was a great deal back in the day when a calendar lasted over 5,000 years – but apparently the folks behind that calendar are no longer in business. (The ancient Mayans were apparently unfamiliar with built in obsolescence )
Readers should visit ThinkOakland.org, or join the Facebook invite for updates.
This is great! I am definitely getting the Pizza and Wings deal that night.
