College athletes might seem strong and sturdy when they take the playing field, but The Ramapo Roadrunners showed appreciation for a different type of strength as they welcomed Evan Hurwitz of Oakland on to their team. Tough enough to survive brain surgery and chemotherapy, Evan is also enough of a kid to enjoy the benefits of being an honorary member of the Ramapo Roadrunners baseball team.
A ceremony was held in the beginning of February where the Ramapo baseball team welcomed Evan, his family, and representatives of the FriendsOfJacklyn.org to a major bash at the college. FriendsofJacklyn.org has paired 80 children with college or high school teams in 20 different sports around the country. The baseball players at Ramapo provided decorations, food and song, and coerced mascot Rocky the Roadrunner to appear for some added entertainment.
“Friends of Jacklyn is all about love, support, and friendship. FOJ matches a child with a college or high school sports team based on geographic location. Once the team and child have been matched, there is a ceremonial adoption. The child is surrounded by 20 or 30 new friends that rally around him or her. A deep bond is formed between the child, the child’s family and the sports team. The relationship is a priceless gift. The gift is in the relationship; a child is gaining a loving support network and the team is gaining an insight into the value of life and the power of love.”
Diagnosed in July 2006 with Medulloblastoma, eight year old Evan underwent brain surgery, radiation, and 14 months of chemotherapy.
He continues with his treatments while pursuing the normals wants of childhood which include theater and other extracurriculars in addition to his school work.
Everyday nine children in the U.S. are diagnosed with a brain tumor.
