The Oakland School Board recently dealt with replacing the Valley Middle School principal, and now they will be seeking to replace Richard Heflich who announced his retirement as the Oakland Superintendent of Schools.
According to sources who attended the first regularly scheduled Board of Ed meeting of the school year, it was announced that Heflich would be retiring as of January 1st.
It is unclear at this point as to why the mid-school year date for retirement was chosen, but there is speculation that it may be related to recent caps placed on compensation for NJ school superintendents.
Chris Christie pushed through a salary cap of $175,000 for districts with less than 10,000 students, and Heflich’s salary is listed as $198,000 on the APP Data Universe. There has also been court cases that have upheld a $15,000 limit on cashing in on unused sick days.
While Acting NJ Education Commissioner Christopher Cerf recently told a group of school administrators that he would be reviewing the imposed cap, NY state Governor Cuomo is seeking to impose a similar $175,000 cap.
Wyckoff last year appointed a new superintendent at a salary of $155,000, and his contract is available on the Wyckoff Board of Ed website.
