A rabid raccoon was found in Ramapo River Reserve over the weekend, and a rabid skunk was recently found in Paramus. A new influx of rabies has occurred in the area.
Residents should notify the police when they encounter wildlife that is acting in a drunken state, animals that seem overly friendly or do not run when they see you, or wildlife not normally seen during the day. Please keep your distance, giving animals room to escape. Do not try to contain or corner any animal as all animals will bite when they feel threatened. Never leave small animals or children outside unattended. Do not feed stray animals of any type, including cats and other animals that seem friendly. Please be aware of your surroundings while hiking and be sure your domestic animals’ rabies vaccinations are up to date.
