On June 17, 2011 Ptl. Kern responded to assist a Franklin Lakes Police Officer who encountered a disabled vehicle on I-287 southbound in Oakland . Upon his arrival, it was determined that the driver of the vehicle, a 30 year old Parsippany, NJ resident had parked and fallen asleep on the shoulder of the highway. As the officer attempted to awaken the driver she became startled and attempted to operate her vehicle by depressing the accelerator pedal while the vehicle was still in park. After instructing the driver to lower the window of her vehicle, the officer immediately detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the vehicle’s passenger compartment. Standardized field sobriety tests were subsequently conducted on-scene and the driver was ultimately arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. She was transported to HQ where she submitted samples of her breath for chemical testing. Summonses were issued for D.W.I. and for failing to change her address on her driver’s license. A June 2011 court date has been scheduled in the Oakland Municipal Court.
On June 24, 2011 Officers were dispatched to investigate the report of several individuals who were observed on the property of a vacant house on Roosevelt Blvd. While speaking to the individuals next to their vehicle, Sgt. Sanzari observed a clear glass “mason jar” filled with suspected marijuana in plain view on the passenger seat. The jar was seized and one of the individuals present, a 20 year old Oakland resident, claimed ownership of it and was subsequently handcuffed and searched by Ptl. Broek. A search of his person revealed the existence of another small bag of suspected marijuana in his jacket pocket. He was transported to HQ and charged with the possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, which was also located within the vehicle. He was released ROR and given a date to appear in the Oakland Municipal Court.
