Oakland, N.J., August 28, 2015 – Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc, rescued an extremely neglected dog who was left abandoned for three weeks.

Chelsea was abandoned by her owners and left in an apartment with no water and no food. When RBARI arrived she was encrusted in a cocoon of her own fur. Her fur was badly matted and full of dirt and feces. RBARI was notified by animal control and immediately sent our staff to rescue her. Upon our arrival Chelsea was laying on her side in an outside run. She had many mats impeding her legs from moving properly which made it difficult for her to walk to us. Her nails were so overgrown that the simple act of walking was extremely painful for her. We also discovered small leech-like worms feeding on her legs when we shaved her matted hair. It took a total of 7 hours and 4 baths to remove all the filth covering this precious little dog. The pile of matted and crusted hair removed was larger than Chelsea herself!  She is a cute little Yorkie, with a very loving personality.

As Chelsea was being cared for, she could not stop expressing her gratitude by giving constant kisses and even attempting to cuddle during her grooming! She was given a choice of sleeping in an open crate with blankets, a fluffy dog bed, or a small comforter. She chose to settle down in our groomer’s basket of clean laundry.

This type of horrific matting of the fur doesn’t come from missing a few grooming sessions. It doesn’t happen after three weeks or even a few months. Poor Chelsea had never been groomed for her entire life. To see Chelsea now is truly amazing. She is so full of love and affection and is looking for her forever home. If you are interested in adopting Chelsea please visit our website at www.rbari.org and complete an adoption application.
