The New Eileen Mullin Playground 5

colonyplaygroundThe Colony Park received a new playground this week. After a long wait the Eileen Mullin Playground now has a fun, safe, state-of-the-art playground. The Rec Commission thanks to all those involved in making this a reality, and thanks to Joe F. and his crew of Jimmy and Derrick for putting the finishing touches on the playground this week.

As the Oakland Recreation Commission continues to improve the Recreation Infrastructure, the next BIG thing will be a new surface for the main playground. Out will be the cut up dirty tire pieces, in will be a new ADA compliant, colorful, clean and soft surface. The Commission, Borough and DPW chose the very safe tile surface to replace the old rubber pieces. Keep an eye on the playground as June is the target month for completion.

Now where exactly in Oakland is this again? The area in the picture doesn’t look familiar to me…

This is in “The Colony” area. Take West Street off of West Oakland Avenue and then a right onto Park Drive.

Drove by and it looks great. I’m sure the children will enjoy it. Let’s just hope there’s no more flooding to wash it all away.

I was not aware that the DPW was performing this installation. When I submitted my bid it included installation. That was how they passed this more expensive priced unit as opposed to my on sale proposed unit. I challenge them to show me what they paid to see if hey got a better deal vs what I proposed from my manufacturer. Can’t wait to see how smooth the new rubber safety tiles get installed.

The DPW put on the “finishing touches”, this was the mulch that was laid. The DPW did not have anything to do with the installation. Oakland followed all BID procedures to the letter of the law. If anyone has any questions as to what the specs posted by Oakland and what the BIDs offered were, I recommend OPRA’ing the records.
All Oakland residents should be happy that those living in the colony section finally have a new playground for their children. The Recreation Commission is presently looking into replacing the old basketball backboards in the same playground to complete the restoration.
