Barnstable Academy Welcomes Sergeant Joseph Asaro to the Classroom
Barnstable Academy’s United States History classes had the good fortune of learning from United States Army Sergeant Joseph Asaro. History teacher Mr. Kroner’s grade school friend, Sergeant Asaro volunteered his time to speak in some of Barnstable’s history classes about his experience in Afghanistan as a soldier.
A graduate of Quinnipiac University, Sergeant Asaro shared why he enlisted in the army even after earning his four year college degree. In addition, he discussed many topics including the G.I. Bill, basic training, living with and dealing with the Afghani Army in the fight against the Taliban, as well as a few of his missions.
“The students in those classes were fascinated by Sergeant Asaro’s real-life stories,” explained Lizanne M. Coyne, Barnstable’s Executive Director. “They especially enjoyed hearing about his role as a sergeant and Humvee leader,” Coyne added.
Sergeant Asaro brought in photographs from his tour abroad. “The pictures gave a true perspective of the conditions and living arrangements for our military personnel, ” Coyne described. “Seeing and hearing about Sergeant Asaro’s first-hand experience gave the students a better understanding and more appreciation for all that our service men and women do for our country,” expressed Coyne.
