VMS Celebrates Earth Day

BIOSPHERE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE CELEBRATES THE 44TH ANNIVERSARY OF EARTH DAY WITH STUDENTS OF VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL IN OAKLAND, NJ.

(Oakland, NJ, April 25, 2014)—Biosphere Landscape Architecture, of Saddle River, New Jersey, celebrated Earth day this past Friday April 25th with the students from the fifth and sixth grade classes along with the faculty of Valley Middle School, Oakland, New Jersey, by donating the labor and materials necessary to plant a special Earth Day tree.

Peter J. Kikot, Sr. Designer at Biosphere L.A. donated a beautiful Malus ‘Louisa’, or what is commonly known as a Crab Apple tree, a stunning pink flowering weeping ornamental tree. Kikot and the many students participated in a question and answer discussion on the importance that trees play in our ecosystem and how important it is to recycle, to conserve water, composting to save money from unnecessary disposal into landfills and how idling your car for just ten seconds is immediately harmful to those inside the vehicle and also the effects that has on our environment. Then the students, with the guidance of faculty and the instruction of Kikot, helped Kikot to plant the tree, backfilling and tamping down the soil, creating a mulch ring and watering the tree.

Kikot commented “A great big thank you to Principal Gregg Desiderio and Teacher Ryan Gilligan for helping me to put this event together. I thought the students did an excellent job planting the tree and I was encouraged by their enthusiasm and knowledge of our environment and how their actions affect it.”

Biosphere also donated 300 White Pine Saplings that each of the students were able to take home and plant in their own yard. A planting care guide for their new tree and other environmental brochures were distributed to encourage the parents to work with their children to participate in the towns recycling program and to create composting bins and rain gardens on their properties to continue to help make our environment sustainable.

Please contact Peter J. Kikot to sign up your school for next year’s Earth Day events at (201) 236-3628 or via email at peter@biospherela.com.
