There’s a new town in town, and it goes by the name of the Ramapo Mountain Lakes, Inc.
Technically, it’s not a town but a lake association of Oakland homes; but, the breadth and magnitude of its disputed membership makes it bigger than dozens of towns in New Jersey.
The borders of the town within a town would make proud any gerrymandering politician, though the majority of the disputed members live somewhere in the vicinity of Oakland’s Crystal Lake or Mirror Lake. On the other hand, some homes within walking distance are not members, and those who would need to drive to one of the lakes are listed as members.
A shareholder meeting scheduled for March 2nd in Ponds Reformed Church at 7pm should provide new insights and developments.
The RML posted a list of their identified shareholders which is approximately 1650 homes spanning over 40 streets in Oakland. Oakland has approximately 4,400 homes, making the RML an association that dwarfs the Ramapo River Reserve which numbers approximately 400 homes.
Unlike homeowners in The Reserve, many homeowners listed in the RML shareholder list are disputing their status as shareholders.

An informational meeting open to the public was held in January of this year, and the RML then proceeded to make this information available online with a narrative describing the original formation in 1937 and including developments and case law that occurred over the next 8 decades.
They also included a list of their members according to home address, and a map that details some of the impacted neighborhoods.
A shareholder meeting, with the potential to be the largest meeting in Oakland history, is scheduled for March 2nd in Ponds Reformed Church at 7pm. The March 2nd meeting will also culminate the tabulation of a proxy vote that is to commence starting on February 17th when ballots are mailed to shareholders.
