Spring is not in the air – but it is here. On Wednesday, March 20th at approximately 7:02am Spring will be declared, though the weather still needs to begin cooperating.
Oakland, Wyckoff, and Franklin Lakes – along with the rest of New Jersey – has another winter storm scheduled for March 18th – and hopefully it will not be too much snow and/or ice.
While cold and snow still torment the winter weary, the signs of spring are happening. The most notable being the days working toward getting longer than the nights. The Spring (vernal) equinox marks the time when day & night are approximately equal in length.
Another sign of Spring is the pre-season trout stocking now taking place throughout NJ. The Ramapo River will be getting stocked with 5,220 trout between Mar 18 -Apr 5th. Opening day for trout season in NJ is scheduled for April 6th. By the end of May, the river will have been stocked with a total of 16,320; and approximately 600,000 trout will have been stocked throughout the state.
Those itching to get their hands dirty, the last frost date is scheduled for April 3rd. Cool weather crops such as cabbage, spinach, lettuce and peas can be planted earlier. Those planting a garden for their Mediterranean Diet – with tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, etc – have to be careful since frost can seriously affect them.
Another good sign that Spring really is here – Opening Day for Major League Baseball. There is actually an Opening Night game on Sunday, March 31st, but Opening Day is set for Monday, April 1st with the Yankees going against the Boston Red Sox, and the Mets vs Padres.
Hang in there, spring is here and sooner or later the weather will start to agree with the calendar. It will come…the winter coats, hats and gloves will eventually be stored away, the snow will eventually stop falling, and Spring will come.
With that in mind, The Journal offers a couple of music videos that can help get you in the mood what the inevitable, the inevitable return of Spring.
First up is the Lovin’ Spoonfuls with Daydream – dreaming of those warm weather days. The next video is Simon and Garfunkle – and they are feeling groovy.
