Is Bob Menendez Insane?

bob_menendez_insaneSenator Bob Menendez has gone insane and needs to resign.

It’s not because of unsubstantiated claims about prostitutes.

Ronald Reagan put the relationship between politicians and prostitues in perspective when he proffered, “It’s been said that politics is the second oldest profession. I have learned that it bears a striking resemblance to the first.”

It’s not because it appears Menendez has been lobbying on behalf of a major donor from Florida in an effort to help the man’s business. Politicians need to make a living, and they do that by being politicians — and that means selling their services to the biggest donors.

Menendez was apparently putting pressure on Washington officials to force the Dominican Republic to honor a contract that would directly benefit the Menendez donor from Florida. The contract has not been enforced because because some  -like the American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic which represents over 2,000 American and Dominican companies – have argued that the contract is an unfair monopoly prohibited by law.

That’s not the reason that Bob Menendez needs to resign….Menendez should not resign because he does what everyone else in Washington, DC does.

Neither should he resign because of an apparent “oversight” in his failing to pay for two personal flights to the Dominican Republic aboard the private jet of his Floridian benefactor. Everyone forgets to pay their bills, especially to friends and benefactors; Menendez recently paid for the flights, so it’s old news now.

The real reason why Bob Menendez should resign is not that he is corrupt – there’s no evidence of corruption. As Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid noted, “He did nothing wrong.”

But the one indisputable reason why Senator Bob Menendez needs to resign – and now – is because he is insane.

When Menendez recently paid for those two flights to the Dominican Republic – over two years later – he cut a check for over $58,000 — that’s fifty eight thousand dollars.

While a United States Senator should never fly coach – God forbid our country ever sink to such depths – it is simply insane to pay $58,000 for two flights to the Dominican Republic which is just a hop-skip-an-a jump from Florida.

$58,000 might not be much for Bill Gates or even Donald Trump — but Menendez is not super-duper-rich. In 2011, his net worth was estimated between $317,005 to $680,000. That’s healthy, but not so healthy that you blow a big chunk of change for a private jet.

Average Americans do comparative shopping, look for bargains, deals, and leave the Thanksgiving day table in search of “insanely low prices”. Senator Menendez, on the other hand, is himself  insane; he should resign from office and seek medical attention.
