What’s Shakin’ Oakland?

metafitnessWhat is metabolic training? It’s a question folks in Oakland might want to ask themselves as Meta Moves Fitness moves into Ultimate Sports.

Ultimate Sports is partnering with Meta Moves Fitness to offer both metabolic training classes, and to operate the snack bar which now offers a menu geared towards healthy snacks and drinks.

Meta Moves Fitness, founded by former Marine Chris Pickett and and former Air Force pilot Sean Chuplis, brings a niche exercise regimen to Oakland – as well as a new snack bar at Ultimate Sports where many Oakland teams – from grammar school through high school – practice in the off seasons.

metafitness_standAvailable in the lobby of Ultimate Sports, the new snack stand offers another option for post-work out thirst & hunger….or even for those in town just looking for a healthy snack option. The Journal reached out to the guys at Meta Moves Fitness to get a better understanding of their metabolic exercise program, and their new snack bar at Ultimate Sports.

While Sean and Chris are partners in this endeavor, Chris Pickett is the one with boots on the ground in Oakland

What’s the difference between a normal gym workout and metabolic training?

Traditionally strength training consists of doing one exercise followed by a period of rest.  Another round of the same exercise is completed then more rest.  Metabolic training is uses multiple exercises with minimal rest between movements.  The ultimate outcome is the blend of strength (anaerobic) and cardio (aerobic) conditioning to burn a ton calories, especially fat

Can anyone participate in the metabolic training classes, or should a person have a certain fitness level?

All of our programs can be tailored to beginners, experienced gym goers, and everyone in between.

Generally speaking, what’s your recommended age level for the classes?

We serve clients who are 18+.  Currently my oldest clients are in their mid-60’s.

Can you tell us what’s on the menu in a little more detail?

Our menu contains both protein shakes and fruit smoothies (no protein added).  The protein shakes come in three varieties:  chocolate, vanilla or fruit based.  There are over two dozen flavors to choose from.

What’s the purpose of a protein shake?

Protein shakes serve a few purposes.  One reason is to fuel your body after a workout with a clean, quickly digestible food to aid in recovery and begin the body’s repair process.  Another is a convenient meal replacement.  It’s a great meal to take on the go.   Third, it makes a nice treat.  Think milk shake without the guilt.

Are the protein shakes meant for kids?

Our shakes can be enjoyed by everyone.  There is nothing processed in our shakes, no  high fructose corn syrup or aspartame.  Drinking one of our protein shakes is equivalent to eating 1 – 2 servings of chicken or other lean protein.

What’s is on the menu that you think kids would like in terms of drinks and snack?

Besides the protein shakes we do offer refreshing fruit smoothies made with a combination of fresh and frozen fruits. There is no added protein to these drinks.

How did your military experience influence your views on exercise and nutrition?

Serving in the military obviously carries a certain need to stay fit.  But what I learned most is that what you eat completely affects the physical outcome.  What I try to convey more than anything to my clients is you can never outwork a bad diet.
