Radio Free Oakland

Reporter Ryan Robinson is looking to fill some time slots. There’s room for creativity for those interested in helping to create some original broadcasting material for radio.

Prior to contributing to The Oakland Journal, Reporter Ryan Robinson had established an amateur radio program offering a mix of entertainment and talk. Ryan is responsible for the programming, as well as the technical components. He employs technology that, besides offering the traditional uses of FM radio, is now employed by numerous commercial and non-profit entities.

The technology is widely used in commercial buildings, at high school sporting events, racetracks; it is also employed by churches and theaters for those with diminished hearing, and has been finding popularity with realtors. “The Talking House” signs are popping up which allow people driving by to tune their radio to a station and hear details about the house which is for sale. Ryan’s semi-pro radio station is presently applying the standard format that has entertained listeners for decades.

Ryan is presently looking to fill some time slots. Any youth wishing to contact Ryan or learn more can email charleymccormick@gmail.com, and it will be forwarded asap. Below is Ryan’s description of the operation and tips for those applicants that may be interested.

Hi everyone, I’m Ryan Robinson. Besides being a writer and reporter for The Oakland Journal, I have a VERY SMALL radio station! As of right now, I can only do my block and maybe a tad more. (Don’t worry..better antenna coming soon!) Anyway, while I have just revamped my schedule, I seem to have two openings. I have 1 spot for the weekdays and one for the weekends. The weekday slot would be Mon-Fri from 3pm to 6pm. The weekend from 1pm-3pm. Now, since we are not a big radio station (but still trying to grow) we don’t do anything live except when there is a major weather disaster, warning, major news story, etc. So, one would have 2 choices to record themselves.

Option 1:
You do little snippets of yourself talking. They can range for 1 minute to even 10! You could just talk in general about anything or maybe your show has a topic. For example, you could focus just on local events. Or, maybe just about computer news, etc. The only problem is, if you are going to do a major topic, you would need to make recordings often to keep up with the news. That’s why most people don’t do that if they don’t have a lot of time.

If you do have a lot of time, option 2 would be best for you.

Option 2:
This is time consuming, but it can be a lot of fun. Just record yourself talking, but really be like a DJ. When you feel the time is right, slip in a song! Add a few jingles, etc. and you’ll feel like you are really on the radio! Just make sure you make them often or the listeners will get bored.

Do you want this job? Do you want to be on local radio? Just contact The Oakland Journal and they’ll contact me! When you apply, tell me your radio name! For example, my friend’s name is Dan. His radio name is Dan the Man. It doesn’t have to rhyme, but it should be catchy and easy to remember. (I’ll help you if you can’t think of one!) Also, tell me which option you would do and what you would do in your show.

The radio station’s name is Oakland FM and we broadcast on frequency 104.7. We play music from the 50’s to today, and with no particular genre. So, we are kind of a mix station! When you apply and we accept you, we’ll give you some jingles to use and advice!

PS: Oh, one last thing, since you are making recordings, there are some simple rules to remember! To remind myself when recording, I take a post it note, write it down and put it on my computer to remember! Here is the list:
· Don’t say the date
· Don’t say the time
· Don’t say the weather
· Don’t say your real name (privacy reasons)
· Don’t say news (unless you will be doing like a weekly news show!)

Whew! I know it seems like a lot, but hey, once you get it, it’s a piece of cake! If you would like to know our schedule, here it is:
