The Sports Association of Oakland was very busy this summer fine-tuning their communication abilities by putting parents in direct contact with recreation news “as it happens”.  Working with Recreation Chair Mike Guadagnino, this new process will remove barriers between recreation coaches/commissioners and their participants. “In this age of overwhelming digital communication it is almost archaic for parents to wait for the sign-up flyer to come home from school, or wait for an email from your coach about practice being canceled” said Guadagnino.  “Almost everyone is connected to each other through Facebook and Twitter, and if the SAO has given us the ability to use this technology to enhance Recreation then I say Thank You SAO!”  Mike emphasized that this is not a borough or even an Oakland Recreation project; it is a Sports Association sponsored endeavor.  “The volunteers at the SAO once again have raised their hand and offered to help make the recreation programs even greater”.  “Sure we will still send home flyers from the school, and expect our coaches to contact their parents via email and phone calls, but by using social media we can get information broadcast to Oakland in real time; as the cliché goes “you will know as I know”.

The Recreation Commission has a great website, and this year many sports have started allowing parents to sign their children up online with a “sign-up and mail-in” registration form. “The Facebook and Twitter pages will also have direct links to our website, directing parents to sign-up pages, coaches’ certification information page and everything else our website offers”.  Mike continued “The SAO has been a real champion of recreation, whether it is helping to pay our baseball umpires, raising funds for the future walking path or being the 501c3 bank for the many sports fundraisers, it has been a great marriage between the Recreation Commission and the SAO.  I’m very proud that we have such a great group of volunteers that extend past our recreation programs and into our volunteer support structure”.

Anyone wishing to get connected would need to “Like” the Sports Association of Oakland on Facebook and/or “Follow” Chairman Guadagnino on Twitter @MGuad27.  Mike will also be tweeting information about all progress of the new park.   Get connected Oakland!
