March Concert Sponsored by the New Friends of the Oakland Public Library

The New Friends of the Oakland Public Library continue their Sunday Afternoon Concert Series with Bach, Debussy and More, a concert for Harp, Flute, and Viola, on Sunday, March 22 at 4:00 p.m. The free concert will be held at the Presbyterian Church of New Jersey on 222 Ramapo Valley Road, in Oakland.  The facility is wheelchair accessible.

Laura Sherman, currently the harpist at the Broadway show Wicked will be featured in this concert which highlights works from Bach and Debussy.  Ms. Sherman has toured extensively in the U.S. and abroad with Barbara Streisand, The Philharmonica Hungarica, and the NYC Opera.  She has performed with the NYC Ballet, American Symphony Orchestra, the Spoleto Festival in Spoleto, Italy and the New World Symphony.

Skead for a discussion of their book, Patriots, Redcoats, and Spies on Thursday, March 26 from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m.  This is the first time the two have written together, and the result is the first title in the American Revolutionary War Adventure Series.  Oakland’s own Van Allen home is a part of the story.  Oakland residents of all ages are invited to come to the Oakland Public Library and meet these two talented authors!  Copies of the book will be available for purchase.  Registration is requested, but not required.  Visit us in person, call us at 201-337-5236, or go to our website at http://oaklandnjlibrary.org for further details about this fantastic program.

March Special Event at the Oakland Public Library (Adult Dept.)

An organic farmer from Bracco Farms in Pine Island, NY (near Warwick), will teach backyard gardeners how to handle bugs, crops, soil and weeds on Saturday, March 14 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Oakland Public Library.  Come with all your questions, and leave with answers.  Bracco Farms came into being in 2009, born out of a passion for fresh vegetables and fruit.  Their mission is to provide the best possible naturally grown produce to the public, restaurants, and food markets.  Registration is recommended in person, online at http://oaklandnjlibrary.org, or by calling 201-337-3742.

Computer Workshops at the Oakland Public Library (Adult Dept.)

The Oakland Public Library will be holding six Computer Workshops on Wednesdays from March 18th through April 29th from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.  The workshops will be an Introduction to Computers, Basic Mousing 101, Introduction to the Internet, Searching the Internet, Microsoft Word Basics Part I and Microsoft Word Basics Part 2.  Please register with Cathy Sandak by phone or in person at the Oakland Public Library at 201-337-3742.

March Special Events at the Oakland Public Library (Children’s Dept.)

Oakland students, grades 6 & up, will participate in a “DIY” or “Do-It-Yourself” Day in the Oakland Public Library on Thursday, March 12 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.  Teens just need to bring their creativity!  Registration is not required.

“Tail Waggin’ Tutors” is an opportunity for Oakland children, ages 5 & up, to read to a very lovable dog.  Sadie, and her “Mom”, Donna, will visit the Library on Thursday, March 12 from 5:30 to 6:10 p.m.  Sadie is a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International.  Each child will have about ten minutes to read a favorite story to a dog.  The program will be held in the Library’s story gallery.  Please register in person, online at http://oaklandnjlibrary.org or by calling 201-337-5236.

A special “Drop-In” Spring Craft will be held on Thursday, March 19 from 3:45 to 5:45 p.m. in the Pat Turnier Craft Room of the Oakland Public Library.  Oakland children of all ages are invited to attend.  Registration is not required.

candyleaf Maple Sugar season is just around the corner! The Nature Place Day Camp will present a program on maple sugaring in the Oakland Public Library on Thursday, March 5 from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m.  The program will include a slide presentation on the history of maple sugaring, tapping a maple tree near the Library, and tasting some maple sugar goodies!  Oakland children, ages 5 & up, are invited to attend the “Maple Sugaring” program.  Please register in person, call us at 201-337-5236, or visit our website at http://oaklandnjlibrary.org.

Book Discussion Group at the Oakland Public Library

will be celebrated during March and April.  The Principals of Heights, Dogwood Hill, and Manito Schools will read to their students in the Oakland Public Library’s story gallery.  On Wednesday, March 18 from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m., Ms. Ciambra from Heights School will be the featured reader.  Mr. Clark from Dogwood Hill School will read to his students on Tuesday, March 24 from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m.  On Tuesday, April 21, Mr. Silverstein from Manito School will be the Library’s guest reader.  All students should check with their School for further details.  The Children’s Dept. looks forward to the Principal Visits for our “Leaders are Readers!” program.

Art Displays at the Oakland Public Library

Photographer, Scott Perry, will be the featured artist in the Oakland Public Library during March and April.  He will have a nature exhibit in the upstairs display case, and the Lower Level gallery will showcase his extraordinary nature photographs.
