Oakland, NJ (PRWEB) March 20, 2009 — Jim DeLillo an exclusive photographer for iStockphoto has literally reached for the stars to add a new niche to his portfolio. A resident of Oakland, NJ, DeLillo uses remote telescopes located as far away as New Mexico and Australia to image the heavens.

Stunning Astrophotography
Objects he photographs may be millions of light-years away. DeLillo subscribes to several services including Lightbuckets.com and Global-Rent-Scope.com .

These facilities rent time on large computer-controlled telescopes under dark skies, areas somewhat protected from the ravages of light pollution. The remote telescope services are available to anyone.

The work doesn’t stop there. The individual frames, currently in black and white must be calibrated, stacked, combined, converted to color, and enhanced to make the final work of art
Astrophotography on iStock is an untapped niche, and I offer designers the opportunity to have high-quality, astronomical images that they cannot find anywhere else
To make his photos, DeLillo logs on to his computer at home, and via a web interface, directs the telescope to the object of interest. He selects the point in the sky, the color of the filters, and the time of the exposures. The telescope is automatically guided to stay aimed at the object during the entire exposure. Exposure may range from minutes to hours, and may even span several nights.

“The work doesn’t stop there. The individual frames, currently in black and white must be calibrated, stacked, combined, converted to color, and enhanced to make the final work of art,” says DeLillo “The result is stunning images of galaxies, nebula, and starfields in brilliant color.

Color and detail that isn’t even seen when observing the object visually through the eyepiece. It takes time to build up the image from the faint photons landing on the camera’s sensor.”

“Astrophotography on iStock is an untapped niche, and I offer designers the opportunity to have high-quality, astronomical images that they cannot find anywhere else” , he continued.

In order to learn his new craft, DeLillo spent three days at the top of 9,157 ft Mt. Lemmon in Arizona. The University of Arizona offers a course in Astrophotography Image Processing at their observatory location that houses a 24″ telescope.
