Oakland Borough Attorney Fired

sewerThe Oakland Borough Attorney, Brian Chewcaskie, has been fired…but not from Oakland.  Also fired, in what is being described as the Monday Massacre, was Wyckoff resident Jason Shafron.

Providing legal services to multiple municipalities may mean more money, but the position of commissioner on the Northwest Bergen County Utilities Authority also had it’s perks.

It’s the perks, and the refusal of the commissioners to surrender them, which has led to the firing of 7 of the 9 commissioners.

Donovan has been wrestling with the 7 commissioners to give up their $5,000 yearly stipend and the archaic concept of full-time health benefits for less than part-time work.

The Northwest Bergen County Utilities Authority is the entity responsible for bringing sewers to Franklin Lakes downtown, and provides sewage treatment services to numerous other  municipalities in northwestern Bergen County.

The Fired 7 are fired-up, and going to court claiming Donovan does not have the authority to fire Authority commissioners; but, Donovan disgagrees. Citing Governor Christie’s similar efforts to clean up the Passaic Valley Sewage Commission, she believes her actions are legal.
