Full-time Mom, Part-time Work 2

Part-time work, flex-time, job shares, telecommuting, home based businesses and direct selling are some of the preferred options for moms who need or want to work. For mothers who can afford to work part-time, jobs that are strategic, stimulating and career-building can be hard to come by.

If you’ve ever heard of Avon or Mary Kay cosmetics , you’ve heard of direct selling, but those are just two popular brands being sold in home parties. Direct selling is the sale of consumer products or services, away from a retail store. Women make up more than 80 percent of direct sellers in this booming business. Many moms do this work part-time, whenever they choose, because direct selling offers ultimate flexibility.

Marci Sorce of Oakland, a consultant for the Pampered Chef shared her experience with us. With two children ages 3 and 5, Marci wanted to work but knew she didn’t want to have an office job or to put her kids in even part-time day care. She knew working part-time was an option for her family, and she found The Pampered Chef to be a great fit with her background, interests and life. “I like to cook, I like people, and I like to get out of the house.” Marci explains.

“I love getting out into the community and meeting people, helping plan an event where hosts can have friends, family or neighbors over for some good food and some good fun”. Baby showers can be a very practical hosting idea, “We offer products for the kitchen that can really help during that time when the baby is really taking up all your time and energy. And we have a portfolio of “Power Recipes” that are great for the new mom.”

Marci also offers special packages for fund-raisers where a local organization can raise money based on the number of sales. “It’s a great service that I can offer in partnership with The Pampered Chef. It works the same as my usual shows, but the non-profit can earn money. We also offer special item’s, in the $5 to $10 range, where a portion of the proceeds goes to charity. This month you can go online and order products that will benefit the American Cancer Society’s fight against breast cancer.”

The majority of her shows are targeted at women, but it goes beyond the usual demographics.”It different than cosmetics or jewelery, because men can also get involved. After all, a lot of these products are “tools”.” Marci advises that a grill themed hosting event in the summer can appeal to all, those who want to stay inside for her demo, and those who want to volunteer to stand outside around the grill.

If this is an Oakland Community Website, I think it would be a good idea to advertise ALL of the other Pampered Chef Consultants (5 or more that I know of) that are in our community, or illiminate the contact information for the one. Other than that, this is a nice article.

We appreciate any additional information that would better inform the Oakland community. April, please forward us the additional information and we will include it in the original article.

As explained in “The Journal Philosophy”, we are two Oakland residents with no financing, no resources, and just an idea to provide a hyperlocal news source for the Oakland community.
