VFW Post 5702 Receives Double Honor
For members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5702, practicing the three Rs, respect, reverence and regard for the American flag, is part of our creed. The post received a double honor recently, when it was presented with flags that had flown over Afghanistan by two different units recently returned from combat operations in that nation.
Part of the mission of the VFW is to support veterans of all ages. When the 508th Military Police Company, headquartered in the Teaneck, NJ Armory, deployed to Afghanistan over a year ago, Post 5702 supported them in two ways. The membership of Post 5702 authorized the purchase of several hundred dollars of gift cards that were given to the Teaneck Armory’s Family Support Center. Those cards were distributed to families of members of the 508th who were in financial need because of the deployment of their family member. Additionally, throughout their tour of duty, Post 5702 sent packages to the unit filled with various foods and supplies.
At a recent meeting of Post 5702 Officers, an enlisted member of the 508th presented the post with the flag and certificate pictured below.
Over a year ago, the post also became aware that a former resident of Oakland, NJ was being deployed to Afghanistan. The young woman had attained the rank of Captain, and the post immediately added her and her unit to the roster of veterans and military units we were supporting. We sent her and her unit non-perishable foods like Girl Scout Cookies, Twinkies, and hot cocoa mix, as well as other products and supplies. In true military tradition, the Captain shared her packages with members of her unit. In one of her communications with us, the Captain indicated that the members of her unit had voted her the person who received the best packages.
Her unit is based far away, and we were pleased, honored, and surprised when we received by mail the flag and certificate from her unit pictured below.
