I’m always hoping for a good time
never happens on a Tuesday night
two weeks and I’m playing the same song
the same rhythm for most of my life-Adam Hood
(See “Announcements” for May 17th Pancake Breakfast)
Singer/Songwriter Adam Hood needs to come up north to Oakland, NJ and see what we have happening. His down to earth style of music – a subtle mix of blues, country, folk and rock -would probably be a big hit with Oakland residents, but he might be inclined to change the lyrics to that song.
Oakland rocks at the recreation fields. NYC may have more bars, pubs and restaurants, but it doesn’t offer any more local flavor than you will find on a visit to Oakland’s Rec fields. With the new Rec Stand open, the fields make even more sense as a place to go with the kids, with some friends, or just yourself. It’s not just about sports. Lots of people were there this past Tuesday evening just to be out of the house and see some action, see some people, socialize and have fun.
Sports is probably the most important unifying aspects of a community, and The Oakland Recreation Commission knows it. Child Trends, Inc reports that over two thirds of 8th through 10th graders participate in organized sports, but even the ones who don’t play sports still need a place to go. The Rec Commission is providing one of the best services in this community by creating a space that welcomes everyone.
“Take me out to the ball game, take me out with the crowd”, says it all. The people who come out to watch the games help make it a real event. With the nice weather, the friendly people, the cheers, it’s great for all members of the community who want to mix with the crowds. The games might be targeted at kids, but it also provides a nice environment for seniors to have some fun on the sidelines checking out the future prospects coming out of Oakland.
There’s something for everyone. Whether it’s supporting your team, enjoying the outdoors, relaxing under a setting sun, or just some old fashion people watching–a popular activity familiar to folks in big cities–The Oakland Rec fields is a place to be.
And for our serious sports fans, we have the highlights from Tuesday night’s games….On Field 6 the Minor’s Division had a game won in the bottom of the last, and on Field 5 the Major’s Division game had a thriller that ended in a tie. And like every rec game, when it was over the kids lined up, shook hands and looked forward to seeing each other in school the next morning.
I agree! We love to go down at night just to walk around & see who is playing a game & root for those we know & those we don’t know! It is a fun, easy, cheap night out!
