November 5th Update

BOROUGH OF OAKLAND

PUBLIC NOTICE

HURRICANE SANDY STORM UPDATE FOR MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2012

This is a message from Mayor Linda Schwager and the Borough Council:

Restoration of Power

Borough Emergency Management Personnel and DPW staff worked with Rockland Electric over the weekend to clear numerous locations of downed wires and trees and pave the way for the restoration of power.  I have spoken with the Governor’s Office, Senior Officials at Orange and Rockland, our State elected officials and Congressman’s offices expressing our dismay with Orange and Rockland’s response and requesting help.  Today I have spoken with another Orange and Rockland representative who assured me that she would communicate actual dates when power is estimated to return to our various areas in town.  As we are able to receive any information about specific restorations times or locations, we will make it available.

Elections

Tomorrow is election day.  Due to the uncertainty of power at the Senior Center, it will NOT be used as a polling location.  If you normally vote at the Senior Center, please go to the Valley Middle School Gym instead.  No other voting locations are affected.

Borough, School and other Facilities

Our Library remains open as a warming center.  Please visit to get warm, charge your cell phones and use our wireless internet.  To assist the public, it will be open from 9am to 8pm Monday and Tuesday.

The Senior Center is still closed due to lack of power.  We do not know when power will be restored so please call ahead before visiting the center.

Schools will be closed tomorrow for election day but will be open the rest of the week, including Thursday and Friday.

The Planning Board Meeting scheduled for this Thursday has been cancelled.

Shelters

Reminder – If you need shelter, there is still space at the Bergen County Police and Fire Academy on Campgaw Road in Mahwah.  We are prepared to open our shelter in Oakland if there is enough of a need.  You can still call 201-337-8111, ext. 201 to provide your contact information.  If you cannot reach anyone at that number then call 201-337-6171.

Dry Ice

Dry Ice supplied by Orange and Rockland is available at 1 Bender Court in Franklin Lakes this evening from 6pm to 8pm.

Generator Shipment

Shoprite has advised the Borough that they will be receiving a shipment of generators later in the day on Monday.

Removal of Tree Debris

Please remember to put out limbs and branches in barrels or bundles and it will be removed as part of the yard waste collection program, which is Monday or Tuesday depending on which side of town you live on. It is the responsibility of the property owner to make their own arrangements to remove any trees not owned by the Borough that fell on their property.

Communications

The Borough website and e-mails system have been intermittent since the storm.  If you need to contact officials at Borough Hall or the DPW, including the Mayor, please call rather than send e-mail.  The Police, Library and Fire Department e-mail systems are working.
