Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge Takes In Paterson Pit Bulls

OAKLAND, NJ – The Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc. (RBARI) in Oakland, NJ has taken in three of the young pit bulls rescued from the Paterson alleged dog-fighting ring on April 18th. The Van Blarcom Street home contained four dead dogs and 21 other dogs, most of whom had sustained severe injuries and were malnourished. RBARI, working with Paterson’s Animal Control Officer John Decando and Second Chance, helped many of the other pit bulls get to rescues who could help. These dogs survived such cruelty yet their warm and friendly demeanors still shine truth as the shelter’s staff and volunteers work to help them rebuild their trust in humans.

RBARI held off on announcing their new arrivals for their safety, to make sure that no one was looking for the dogs. Luckily, aside from a few phone calls, no one approached regarding custody of the dogs.

All three dogs, Pheonix, Chance and Hope are under two years old and, likely, were fortunate to have not yet been forced to fight. Although at first they were nervous and some are still adjusting, the staff and volunteers at RBARI staff are confident that these dogs will make wonderful, loving pets. Hope, who made the front page of the Bergen Record, has settled into her new fame and is now super excited to play outside with all of her other friends. Pheonix, Chance and Hope are now looking towards the future and are excited to begin new lives in their forever homes.

RBARI has been dedicated to helping the pit bull breed specifically in Paterson for over two years through their program – Paterson Initiative to Stop the Overpopulation of Pit bulls or PIT STOP which provides free neutering along with necessary vaccinations for low-income pet owners.
