The Oakland Newcomers and Neighbors Club (ONNC) had a wine tasting event at the Senior Citizen Center. The event, held on election night, was led by CaliforniaWineWorks , which is actually located in Bergen County, NJ. The company specializes in teaching people how to make their own wine. They provide service on every level, from the selection of grapes right down to making your own label. They offer a variety of packages that helps make the process a fun social event as friends and neighbors come together to make their own wine.
The wine tasting event held in Oakland did not involve wine making, only tasting, but their expertise in the area was a great inspiration for ONNC members to try new wines. The selection available was intended to focus on wines that might go well with a Thanksgiving dinner. The owners of California Wine Works led members through a power-point presentation discussing the steps on wine tasting, and how to incorporate a sense of sight and smell as well as taste. Although some might debate white wine being a proper accompaniment to turkey, both red and white wines were available. The wine experts always appreciate a good debate, and the advice offered at this tasting is that white wine can certainly be served with Turkey, but a more full bodied white is appropriate.
