The Future City Competition is held during National Engineers Week. The week long celebration, held the third full week in February, was begun in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers. It was planned to coincide with George Washington’s birthday – Washington’s engineering skills being evident in his acumen survey work.
National Engineers Week raises awareness of the contributions that engineers make, and helps inspire student interest in math, science, and technical skills.
In Oakland, engineering, math and science skills come into play on a regular basis. The issue of the Ramapo River erosion recently remedied by the town council, the planning of the Pleasureland property in relation to flood plains, and plans for designing a skateboard park….all need engineers.
