The substance in a spray tan that makes the skin brown is DHA (dihydroxyacetone). DHA is an FDA-approved simple carbohydrate derived from sugar cane. DHA causes a chemical reaction with the amino acids on the top, dead layer of the skin. A spray tan generally lasts 7-10 days.

According to a recent CNN Money Article citing an IBISWorld report, Self-tanning Product Manufacturing is one of America’s 10 fastest growing industries. Makers of bronzing lotions and sprays are expected to see their sales grow 18.1% in 2012 and it is forecasted that fake tanning products will grow to become a billion-dollar industry within the next five years.
